Seema K Shah

Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Advanced General Pediatrics and Primary Care) and School of Law

Seema K. Shah, JD, Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Northwestern University Medical School and an Associate Director of the Bioethics Program at Lurie Children’s Hospital, is an expert in the fields of pediatrics and global health research ethics, as well as on ethical issues in the determination of death. After attending Stanford University, Shah completed a fellowship in bioethics at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center. Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Critical Care)

My clinical interests focus on cardiac intensive care, chiefly the post-operative care of neonates and children undergoing congenital heart surgery.My primary research interest involves HPA axis dysfunction post-surgery, during sepsis, ARDS and other conditions involving oxidative stress.

Hiroyuki Hirai

Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Hirai joined Northwestern University in July 2018 from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Hirai completed his postdoctoral training in Molecular pharmacology at Northwestern University, Chicago and Stem cell biology at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Michael R Carr

Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology)

My main area of clinical interest lies in pediatric echocardiography and general clinical pediatric cardiology, with an emphasis on Kawasaki Disease. I also have an interest in fetal cardiology and work with the Chicago Institute for Fetal Health. I have a passion for medical student, resident and fellow education, and devote a good deal of my time to these endeavors, mostly from a clinical standpoint. My main areas of research interest include pediatric echocardiography, Kawasaki disease, MIS-C and medical education.

Denise M Goodman

Professor of Pediatrics (Critical Care)

Dr. Goodman obtained her undergraduate degree from Niagara University (BS Physics and BA Chemistry) and her Medical Degree from State University of New York at Buffalo. She completed her pediatrics residency at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, and pediatric critical care medicine fellowship at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota before coming to Northwestern University Feinberg SOM. She has continued to pursue additional training. Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine)

My medical training began at the University of North Carolina where I worked in a research laboratory that focused on diseases of the lung.  Several years later I received my MD degree from that same institution and subsequently moved to Chicago to complete a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine)

My research and clinical interests include topics in pediatric emergency medicine such as analgesia and sedation, pediatric resuscitation, prehospital (EMS) care of children, and education of those involved in emergency care of children.I am the Co-PI of the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program, now based at Lurie Children's and have helped to establish prehospital pediatric protocols, and criteria to assure that emergency departments throughout Illinois are equipped to care for children (facility recognition).

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition)

I am a board certified pediatric gastroenterologist with advanced training in intestinal rehabilitation, hepatology and transplant, and my clinical activities are divided across these areas. I work with wonderful colleagues in the Lurie Intestinal Rehab and Transplant Program, who provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care to patients with short gut syndrome and associated disorders, including those that require bowel transplantation. Instructor of Pediatrics (Rheumatology)

Dr. Patel joined the Division of Rheumatology in 2020. She is experienced in all areas of general pediatric rheumatology but has a special clinical and research interest in complex rheumatic diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic vasculitis. Dr. Patel is fascinated by the pathophysiology of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. She enjoys taking on complex cases with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and tailoring immunosuppressive therapies to help patients achieve the best quality of life possible.
