Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology)
My primary research interest involves neonatal neuroprotection. Neuroprotection with the application of therapeutic hypothermia in term and near-term infants with perinatal brain injury/neonatal encephalopathy, and neonatal stroke. I am the Site PI for Preterm Epo Neuroprotection Trial (PENUT Trial). A Multi-Center, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Phase III 940-subject Trial of Erythropoietin for the Neuroprotection of Extremely Low Gestational Age Neonates (ELGANs); 2013 - 2018.
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition)
As a pediatric hepatologist, I care for children with liver diseases, including those who may need a liver transplant. We have a great team who work hard to provide reassurance and care for both patients and their families during the stress of a critical illness, and I am exteremely proud to work with them.I enjoy the long term relationships that have developed with many of my patients and their families and am grateful to be a part of their lives.

Primary research interest include the quality of life related to families of children with feeding disorders, clinical imaging related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children, and lifestyle interventions used to treat childhood and familial obesity.
Professor of Pediatrics (Rheumatology)
Dr. Marisa Klein-Gitelman has been the division head in pediatric rheumatology since 2002. She has expertise in pediatric lupus, vasculitis, uveitis and neuro inflammatory diseases. She has published/co-authored over 100 journal articles, case reports and reviews, 107 abstracts, 10 chapters in textbooks, and has received over 3500 citations. Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Hematology, Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation)
I am a pediatric neuro-oncologist and my research focus is developing novel therapeutic strategies for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. My research began in 2007 as a pediatric hematology oncology fellow in the Biegel Laboratory (at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) profiling brain tumors on the Illumina 550K high density SNP-array platform. My work directly led to the discovery of an activated novel KIAA1549-BRAF fusion oncogene in the majority of pediatric low-grade gliomas (PLGGs). Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine) and Medical Education
I am a pediatric emergency medicine practitioner and educator who began my work at Northwestern and Lurie Children's in 2001, having completed residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I am the Director of the founder of the kidSTAR Medical Education Program. I am actively involved in the Society for SImulation In Healthcare and the INSPIRE pediatric simulation research consortium.
Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine)
My research and clinical interests include topics in pediatric emergency medicine such as analgesia and sedation, pediatric resuscitation, prehospital (EMS) care of children, and education of those involved in emergency care of children.I am the Co-PI of the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program, now based at Lurie Children's and have helped to establish prehospital pediatric protocols, and criteria to assure that emergency departments throughout Illinois are equipped to care for children (facility recognition).
Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine)
My clinical and research focus is cystic fibrosis (CF). My research interests are development of new diagnostic tools and therapies, characterizing and treating early lung disease, and improving health equity. Since newborn screening in cystic fibrosis has been established in the United States, I have been active in evaluating and improving newborn screening processes and infant outcomes, and in extending highly effective therapies into the care of infants and children.

Dr. Spewak is a hospital pediatrician and director of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Educational Support Program and co-director of the Lurie Children's-McGaw Medical Center Medical Education Elective. He is a member of the Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and a member of the Lurie Children's Pediatric Advocacy Advisory Board.
